Student Welfare

At Moorside High School, we believe that students need to feel safe, happy and supported in order to develop and achieve. We place a strong emphasis on the pastoral needs of our students and have a team of dedicated staff who support them according to their individual needs. Each year group has a Head of Year who are supported by the Senior Leadership Team, the SENDCO and Learning Support Assistants, and the Administration Team.

The aims of pastoral care at Moorside High School are to:

  • Ensure the wellbeing of each member of the school academically, socially, and personally, both as an individual and as a member of the school community
  • Ensure the school always acts in a pupil’s best interests
  • Encourage the moral, spiritual, emotional, and cultural development of the students in the school’s care
  • Encourage students to take increasingly greater responsibility for their own actions.
  • Have a care for the welfare of the students beyond the school environment
  • Ensure that each student contributes as far as they can to the mutual benefit of the school community

Homophobic Bullying and Discrimination

New Government legislation states that schools must be proactive in preventing both homophobic bullying and discrimination and ensure that all children and young people feel safe and included. The following websites offer information and guidance related to homophobia:

Extremism and Radicalisation

Schools have a duty of care to their students and staff which includes safeguarding them from the risk of being drawn into terrorism. Our overriding aim is to ensure that young people are safeguarded and that no one is drawn towards radicalisation and terrorism. We follow the guidelines set out in the PREVENT strategy which forms part of the UK’s overall counter-terrorism strategy: CONTEST.

The aim of the PREVENT strategy is to reduce the threat to the UK from terrorism by stopping people from being drawn into terrorism, either becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. PREVENT works at the pre-criminal stage by using early intervention to encourage individuals and communities to challenge extremist and terrorist ideology and behaviour.
