Geography

Head of Department Miss K Birnie

At Moorside High School, we aim for a Geography curriculum that inspires pupils to be passionate about diversity, in both the human world and the vast range of landscapes found on Earth. To develop this passion, we aim to enable pupils to communicate effectively through discussion, debate and the use of a wide range of analytical/enquiry skills using a variety of information sources. We encourage pupils to be curious and to generate their own questions, which can often take us in many directions and stimulate focused discussion. We aim for our students to add to their knowledge of places both within the UK and outside of the UK and investigate real world issues, using investigative skills, which are soundly based in the principles of geographical fieldwork. Students are encouraged to make connections between people’s actions and the environment and to consider current issues. This includes helping students to develop their own Geography which is unique to our students here in Salford.

We also intend to support our students in continuing with their learning journey at KS4 and KS5. A large number of our students go on to study Geography at GCSE (102 starting in September 2020) and then on to A level. We have worked hard to make sure our curriculum decisions and KS4 choices sit well with the opportunities offered to our pupils here in Salford and are sequenced in a way to maximize their potential futures, including our specification choices.
