Design & Technology
Head of Department | Mrs A Sargent |
At Moorside High School, our Design and Technology Department offers a dynamic, creative, and practical curriculum that equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to become innovative problem solvers and critical thinkers.
D&T is about designing, making, testing, and evaluating real-world solutions. We empower our students to take risks, explore new materials, and develop the confidence to bring their ideas to life.
Our Design & Technology curriculum encompasses Food Preparation, Cooking and Nutrition, D&T including CAD/CAM and practical manufacturing and Graphic Design. Additional subjects that are offered at KS4 include Construction, and Health & Social Care.
In Design & Technology students will explore a range of design and making principles using materials such as timber, plastic, metal, and paper & board. Students will have the opportunity to learn practical workshop skills alongside CAD/CAM and 3D modelling and will learn the importance of user centred design. Pupils are encouraged to consider wider issues such as environmental and ethical issues within design and manufacturing.
Our Food curriculum will equip students with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to cook and apply the principles of food science, nutrition and healthy eating. Food is a vital part of our daily lives and is essential for life. As our students become adults and have busy lives, it is easy to choose food which has been pre-prepared. However, it is more nutritious and often cheaper to cook simple, delicious food. At Moorside High School, students will develop their knowledge and understanding of nutrition, healthy eating, food preparation, hygiene, cooking techniques, and sensory characteristics. Students will develop basic culinary skills as well as a basic understanding of nutrition and healthy eating principles so that they can build confidence when working in the kitchen to design, prepare and make a range of well-balanced food products using basic catering equipment in a safe and hygienic way
At Key Stage 3 each school year is structured in a carousel approach, whereby all students will be taught by specialised teachers who fully understand the requirements of their field and will teach and differentiate in a way that is best suited to each individual learner.
Design and Technology is a subject that we believe is a life skill – relevant to whatever the students do later in life, it opens doors to a wide range of careers, and we are proud to help students develop transferable skills that are valued across many industries.
